Halo 3: HHC4 PC Tournament review

By: kevin Frederick - Published April 19, 2004 at 3:07 PM EDT - Writer Archive
Seems Halo PC tournies are few and far between. HHC's first venture into the Halo PC tournament world was to be quite a challenge and one we were looking forward to. At $50 per player, this 2v2 tourney would probably only draw the hardcore Halo PC addicts feeding for competition. That it did! Eight teams came from Houston, Beaumont, DFW area, and Louisiana to compete for the 2v2 TS bragging rights.

FFA results:
1st: Ryo - great pistol and multiple double steals lead to an easy win
2nd: Roo0 - second with a strong performance but wasn't able to overtake Ryo

Teams were:
Gamer's Paradise (GP) - Ryo/Vespillo
Goochers - Head/Roo0RPT - MoCT/Nigga
SYCO - Ironfist/Saucy
Core Gamers (cG2) - Ace/No1ne
Core Gamers (cG1) - p8nt/Vapid
Sour Patch Kids (SPK)- QTip/Butler (aka sweet/sour)
Grassroots aka Mexican Sensation (MS) - Machina/Zier

Quite a list of experienced CAL players. These 8 teams were split into two pools of four with them playing each team within their pool.

Pool A of MS, cG1, cG2, and RPT was quite a battle. MS ended up in a three way tie with cG2 and RPT with a 2-1 record while cG1 struggled with a 0-3 record. With 148 of a possible 150 kills, MS took the first seed in Pool A.

Pool B of SPK, GP, Goochers, and SYCO was stacked with elite players. SPK edged out GP 50-49 going 3-0 to take the first seed. With the loss, GP went 2-1 with 149 kills edging out MS from Pool A for the second overall seed. Meanwhile, Goochers lost late leads to both SPK and GP to go 1-2 in some very close/exciting pool play games.

All 8 teams made the playoffs and were seeded 1-8. Each round consisted of best 2 of 3 with each team picking a map of their choice. The third map was to be Hang em High if needed (which it never was!).

Round 1:

The Playoff seeds had #1 SPK taking out #8 SYCO easily in 2 maps. #2 GP pwned #7 cG1 in two maps as well. #3MS and #6 Goochers played the most exciting matches of round one which turned out to be #6 Goochers upsetting the #3 seed in two maps to move on. #4 cG2 lost in two maps to #5 RPT.

Round 2: Since both the #3 & #4 seed were upset, #1 SPK had to face #5 RPT and #2 GP faced #6 Goochers. SPK had no problems taking out RPT in 2 maps and won easily. QTip/Butler's teamworked proved too much for MoCT and Nigga as they continued with their map domination. Goochers vs GP was extremely exciting as they lay even for most of the match. In the end, Ryo's pistol was just too strong for Roo0/head as he lead GP to a 2 map victory.

Finals:

GP vs SPKRemember, SPK edged out GP 50-49 in pool play. This time they were fighting for the $300 differential in first/second prize money. Ryo was in desperate need of victory to fund his bus ride home. The first map was Derelict and Ryo's pistol pwnage led to a close 50-46 win. Chill Out was selected as the second map. GP's teamwork was undenied as they finished out with a 50-35 win.
