Day Of Defeat Source: CAL-M Semi-Finals Prediction

By: Kenneth Bech Kroll Jensen - Published February 07, 2007 at 9:10 PM EST - Writer Archive
Wednesday night 4 teams will be playing the match of their lives on Donner in in pursuance of the CAL-M Championship. We have two exciting match ups to look at. We'll take a closer look at the 4 teams and get some comments from the players on what they see what their chances are for the title.

Donner has been a longtime favorite of the Day of Defeat community. While it is not a direct port of its 1.3 counterpart, it is basically the same map and plays much like its predecessor. Since DoD:S' inception in CAL, Donner has been one of the players' favorite and one of the most balanced maps in the rotation. If you plan on watching either of the Semi-Final matches, you can plan on seeing a lot of rifle and sniper action at the tank double cap in middle while the heavies will be battling for control of the bunker. In order to be successful on Donner, teams must be able to control a few crucial areas of the map in order to secure the middle flag. Controlling the bunker is vital to any team's success as it is the means of pushing out to a team's 2nd and also has the connecting hall which allows for capping or breaking of the double cap. The "tank house" is also an important prerequisite for success on this map as it allows a team to control the middle. After a successful middle cap, teams can look to push forward, and depending on the team, will look to move into a pushing position for a capout by controlling areas such as the "rubble," "suze," and "bench alley". Having a team in control of these locations can help drive the opposition into a tight spot and overpower them for a capout. Another important part of Donner is its tendency to allow for "Ninja Caps." It is not unusual to see a team suddenly pull back and hold the double cap in order to bait the opposing team away from there first single cap flags. While this happens, a well-placed player who is hiding can creep out and cap out the final 2 flags without the other team being able to stop it.  This forces teams to keep crystal clear communication throughout the match in order to be successful and pull out the victory. It should be interesting to see the Season 4 Cal-Main Semi-Finals played out on a map where a teams fortunes can turn in an instant.
